“The Santa Cruz makes a compelling case as an SUV alternative with a different sort of utility.” Things We Don’t 1. Truck types likely won’t cotton to the Santa Cruz - but it could lure some out of SUV homogeny: “Whether that’s because of a purist’s idea of what a pickup should be, the Santa Cruz’s relatively small bed, specific additional capabilities mid-size and larger pickups might offer, or some other reason, this Hyundai might just need to look for a different kind of buyer,” Normile writes in his review. It Has Pull 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz | photo by Brian Normileīoasting a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, or 5,000 for AWD models with the more-powerful turbocharged engine offering, the Santa Cruz takes it in a tug-of-war battle not only with its chief rival, the Maverick, but with some mid-size pickup trucks and SUVs as well. These include a lockable underfloor storage compartment with drain plugs in the bed, perfect for filling up with bagged ice and cold beverages a lockable side compartment available with a 115-volt power outlet as well as LED lighting above and within the bed and easy-access steps integrated into the rear bumper. The Santa Cruz is just begging to be immortalized in a bro-country song by Florida Georgia Line on tailgate-party-ready features. Notable features include an available retractable tonneau cover and a middle-position tailgate configuration for hauling sheets of plywood or drywall. What the Santa Cruz lacks in bed size (4 feet with the tailgate closed 6 feet with it open), it makes up for in cleverness. Good in Bed 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz | photo by Brian Normile It has a bit of a Chevrolet Avalanche thing going on, which we mean as a compliment while acknowledging that’s not a consensus opinion. Wirecutter has recommendations for entry-level, midrange, and higher-end mirrorless cameras for people who enjoy photography as a hobby. Mirrorless models also show you a more accurate preview of the photo you’ll get when you press the shutter button: In dim conditions, a mirrorless camera shows you a brighter preview than you’d see with a DSLR, making it much easier for you to ensure that you have everything you want in the frame. Such systems can also detect cars and animals, including birds, and ensure that they’re in focus, which makes it much easier for you to get great shots of the subjects you want the focus system to track as you snag photos on the fly.Īrtificial-intelligence AF hasn’t found its way into all mirrorless cameras yet, but even those without it can do a better job of subject tracking than equivalent DSLRs have in the past. The best of these systems can look at the frame and identify the faces of your family and friends, or any faces that appear in the frame, and prioritize them for focusing and exposure. Plus, thanks to the constant stream of information that’s flowing to the sensor in mirrorless models, camera makers have been able to start integrating artificial intelligence into those AF systems. Mirrorless cameras use the imaging sensor to focus all the way out to the edge of the frame, so you don’t have to jump through those hoops. And if you want to place your point of focus on something toward the edge of the frame, you have to use workarounds like holding a button to lock focus while recomposing the image. As a result, you must keep the subjects you’re trying to track within the area defined by the focus points, which can often be clustered toward the center on cheaper DSLR models. DSLR mirrors allow you to look through the camera lens in a very literal (and analog) way, but that design also means that DSLR cameras have to use an out-of-date autofocus system that isn’t as flexible as the AF systems in mirrorless cameras. The defining difference of mirrorless cameras, namely their lack of a mirror, is also the source of their greatest strength: a direct connection to the imaging sensor, which acts as the collection point for all the incoming data that lets a camera function. Even third-party companies that make lenses for DSLR cameras seem to have started quietly discontinuing those lenses in the latter half of 2022. Canon says that it will keep selling its beginner-level DSLRs, and you can still find Nikon’s D3500, our top-pick beginner DSLR since its introduction, for sale-we’re just not sure for how much longer. This move came after Sony, the second-largest camera maker, quietly bid farewell to its DSLR lenses, and after Canon, the world’s top camera producer, announced that it wouldn’t be developing high-end DSLRs anymore and discontinued a sizable chunk of its DSLR lenses without much fanfare. The summer of 2022 saw Nikon, the world’s third-largest camera manufacturer, make a public shift away from DSLRs and toward mirrorless cameras, which use an electronic screen fed by the camera’s sensor instead of a DSLR’s mirror gimmick to give you a preview of your photo. If you want proof that the technology platform of the DSLR-a digital camera that uses mirrors to bounce light around so that you end up seeing through the lens when you look into the optical viewfinder to frame your picture-has reached its endpoint, consider what camera makers are doing. And don’t throw away your DSLR lenses, either as we’ll explain, you can use them with mirrorless cameras, too. Of course, if your DSLR still works, just keep using it until you need a new camera-the world has enough electronic waste. That’s because digital single-lens reflex cameras are going away, and at the same time, the newest and most innovative features are appearing in mirrorless models. If you’re shopping for a new camera today, you should buy a mirrorless camera instead. It’s official: At this point in time, buying a new DSLR doesn’t make sense. Renting is a great way to explore Ontario’s waterways without having to deal with the storage and transportation hassles of board ownership. Remember that rates will vary with the type of board and geographic location. Some outfitters offer reduced daily rates for weekend and week-long rentals. Expect to pay between $40 and $65 for a full day. Rental rates for partial days average between $25 and $35 per board for 2 to 4 hours. Even a light breeze can quickly carry your board out of your reach if you fall off. A leash should be worn at all times and can save your life. The final piece of equipment that is not required by law but highly recommended is a leash.a watertight flashlight (if you’ll be paddling before sunrise or after sunset).15 metres of buoyant throw line (exception: if everyone on board is wearing a PFD or lifejacket, then a throw line is not required).a whistle (all PFDs should have one attached).a Canadian Coast Guard-approved lifejacket or personal floatation device (PFD) for each person.Standup paddleboarders in Ontario will need to have a few pieces of mandatory safety equipment on board-always check with your outfitter that your rental includes these items, or bring your own: Taking a course is also a great way to meet other paddlers in your area. Visit Paddle Canada or the American Canoe Association to find a course or certified instructor near you. Whether you rent or buy, you’ll benefit from learning and practicing essential paddleboarding safety skills and strokes before setting out. On the other, well-seasoned paddlers often find it easier to rent a paddleboard than to transport their own to faraway locations. On one hand, new paddlers can try a paddleboard rental to see if they like the sport. For many standup paddleboarders, renting a SUP at a paddling destination makes great sense. You don’t need to install Gradle, because it’s distributed as part of the plugin template (the gradle-wrapper.jar file). Additionally, this tool can help solve some package manager tasks, like downloading required libraries. Gradle is the build tool that we’re going to use for running, debugging, and testing our new plugin. When downloading JDK, you can choose any vendor with a version above 11, for example, Amazon Corretto. If you see there or the Java version is below 11, you can download a suitable version, as shown below. For this, go to File | Project Structure in the main menu and specify the Java version under the Project SDK field. The next step is to configure Java and its related tools. You can do this right from the IDE Welcome screen by clicking the Get from VCS button in the top right corner, and specifying your Git repository in the dialog as follows. All you need is to click the Use this template button and specify the plugin name.Īfter that, clone the new project and open it in IntelliJ IDEA. We recommend using the GitHub plugin template. There are several ways to start building a plugin. You can download IntelliJ IDEA from our website or using the Toolbox App as shown below. If you go with the latter, which is paid, you can use a free 30-day trial version. Both Community and Ultimate editions will work. We can’t use WebStorm for this purpose, since we need JVM support. Now that we’ve decided what plugin we’re going to build, we need to install the IDE that will allow us to do that. Although there’s an existing plugin for this framework, we decided to write the support from scratch because it’s a perfect example of how easy it can be to implement some functionality. We’ll use Alpine.js and implement support for its directives as an example. The IntelliJ Platform lets you change almost every part of the IDE, so the difficulty of such tasks can vary from very simple to extremely difficult. You need to write a parser / lexer and implement basic functionality like code completion. Full language support requires a lot of work. You need to specify a place for execution of the tool and write simple code to run the tool and parse the results. Usually, integration with external tools isn’t a big deal. If a framework extends some existing functionality, supporting it is relatively easy. Depending on the framework, adding support for it can be similar to supporting a new language. There are different types of plugins that we can build: Let’s get started with building our first plugin. Step 1: Decide on what plugin you want to build Second, Kotlin, which can be also used for writing plugins, is syntactically similar to TypeScript. First, you can build some plugins without writing any code, and we’ll see how in a moment. There’s some good news for those who don’t know Java. If not, then you can try building a plugin. It may be available out of the box or as a plugin in our marketplace. So, where do you start if you’re interested in building a plugin? First of all, double-check whether the functionality you’re looking for already exists. For example, the Import Cost plugin runs the import-cost npm package under the hood. You can use JavaScript-based integrations in plugins, though. Because of this, you can’t build plugins for them using JavaScript or TypeScript. Both the IntelliJ Platform and WebStorm are JVM applications, written mostly in Java and Kotlin. Like all other JetBrains IDEs, WebStorm is built on top of the open source IntelliJ Platform. In part 2 and part 3 of this series, we’ll build more complex things. In this part, we’ll cover some basic concepts for developing plugins for WebStorm and show you how to build a simple plugin without writing any code. Where do you start? How to work through if you don’t know any Java? We’ll try to answer these questions by walking you through the process of building three plugins for WebStorm. There are thousands of open APIs for extending our IDEs and dozens of ways to do one simple task for a plugin. This documentation is written for those who understand basic Java concepts. There’s comprehensive documentation on plugin development, however: If you’ve ever wondered how to build a plugin for WebStorm or any other JetBrains IDE, you might know it’s not an easy task. There’s no rule you can have only one duct per room. Does Adding More Ducts Improve Airflow to a Room? But it’s best to let an HVAC professional make precise measurements. Online friction loss calculators can help estimate the total CFM for each room. It requires measuring the entire length of the ductwork, multiplying the static pressure measurement by 100, and dividing it by the total length to determine the required airflow volume in CFM. They’ll also use a more advanced calculation that factors in static pressure. The friction loss rate is also important and is impacted by duct length, the number of turns, and various HVAC components.Īn HVAC technician can determine the friction loss rate based on the number of filters, grills, registers, dampers, and other parts in the system. Ductwork Performance : The required air velocity in CFM must be known to achieve proper heating or cooling for each room.Square Footage of Each Room : List out each room and its size in square feet to determine the CFM required for the branch duct serving it.Calculate the Square Footage of Your Home : Your home’s square footage determines the size of the main duct and branches that go to each room. You can manually calculate duct size as follows: Although a 4” x 8” duct is ideal for a 12’ x 12’ room, the actual duct size you need varies based on different aspects of your home (size/number of windows, insulation type, etc.). You generally need at least 1 CFM per square foot, meaning that room’s duct should have a 144 CFM capacity. Increasing the blower speed won’t have much effect if a room’s duct is too narrow.Ī 12’ x 12’ foot room is 144 square feet. To adjust the CFM, you can change the speed of the blower or alter the ductwork size. The main factor in determining this size is airflow volume, measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. Generally, a 12’ x 12’ room requires a 4” x 8” duct. Your HVAC ductwork consists of individual air ducts (tubes, passages, or conduits) that serve each room. To answer the question, “ What size duct do I need for a 12’ x 12’ room ?” we’ll look at how to calculate the duct size you need. Too large or too small a duct can cause a room to be too hot or too cold. The square footage of a room mainly determines the proper duct size. Air ducts must be sized exactly right for a central air conditioning system to work properly. She eventually dies of a broken heart and body worn out from toil. In the narrative, Solomon describes Eliza’s fall from domestic to field slave - because her new mistress, Mrs. Solomon befriends and tries to comfort Eliza, but there is no comfort for her. Eliza had believed that her sexual relationship with her owner, which resulted in the birth of her youngest child, would protect her family from sale, since he had promised to free all of them.Įliza mourns her losses bitterly throughout the early part of Northup’s saga and, as well, in McQueen’s film. He first meet Eliza, a concubine with two children, who epitomizes the loss so many enslaved women and their young endured as a result of sale and separation. slave pen, he takes note of the women around him, providing his reader with detailed accounts of their personal histories - their marital status and their children, their physical attributes, particular skills, and personalities. Nonetheless, Northup’s autobiography offers the historian of slavery and Southern women a rich palette of Southern slave and female life - some of it captured remarkably well in McQueen’s film version.įrom the first day that Solomon is enslaved in a Washington, D.C. His views of the women he encountered in the South perhaps were shaped more by the thirty-three years he had lived free in the North, than the twelve he labored as a slave in Louisiana. He brought these lenses of free manhood, Christianity, middle class status and intelligence to the terrifying scenario of slavery he endured. On morning in March 1841, in Saratoga Springs, New York, when Merrill Brown and Abram Hamilton approached Solomon Northup as part of an elaborate scheme to kidnap and sell him as a slave, their target was about thirty-three, a literate, urban, Christian husband and father of three, a skilled craftsman, inventor, and musician. Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853 (which Northup dedicated to Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose own character “Eliza” was the most famous iconic slave woman of the era) certainly made it possible for a Northern audience to accept the details of rampant sexual abuse and forced concubinage detailed, for example, in Louisa Picquet’s Octoroon: A Tale of Southern Slave Life and Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, both published in 1861. Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New-York, True stories of the inability of enslaved women to maintain the gendered conventions of the day - domesticity, sexual purity, and maternal sacrifice - because of their status as physical and sexual laborers who could not be legally married or have parental control over their children, abound in published accounts from the late antebellum era. Published descriptions of the plight of enslaved women, of course, made for an important abolitionist device intended to gain sympathy for their cause. Indeed, one of the aspects of Northup’s autobiography that convinced director McQueen to adapt it to film was the Northrup's depiction of slave women in his lengthy account. It is, without a doubt, one of the best depictions of antebellum slave life put to film and, along with, Haile Gerima’s 1993 masterwork Sankofa, Stan Lathan’s 1987 Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the indomitable classic Roots of 1977, and Gabriel Ranger’s 2010 I Am Slave, the story of the contemporary enslavement of Mende Nazer, 12 Years a Slave presents some of the most compelling, and soon to be iconic, images of slave women on celluloid. The film has received much early critical acclaim, and rightfully so. and sold as a slave in Louisiana, is the focus of the new film 12 Years a Slave, directed by British filmmaker Steve McQueen and based on Northup’s 1853 published autobiographical account.
